The news was first announced by entertainment pundit and artist manager Nana Poku Ashis, who took to social media to express heartbreak over the loss. DJ Awana, who was affiliated with Adom FM and Hitz FM, reportedly passed away at the 37 Military Hospital in Accra after battling a short illness.

In an emotional tribute, Nana Poku Ashis wrote:
“Rest in power, my friend. I promise to keep working on the plan, even in our loss. Team KBKB shares in the pain of DJ Awana's loss. Until we meet again, journey on DJ; you will be missed.”
Other major voices in the media space, including Nana Yaa Konadu Yiadom, Ohemaa Woyeje, and DJ Ashmen, also took to their platforms to mourn, sharing warm memories and praises for DJ Awana’s legacy.

DJ Awana began his career in 2003 at Tema-based Adom FM and quickly made a name for himself in the radio and live event scenes. In 2007, he stirred headlines after leaving Adom FM to join Oman FM, owned by Stella Agyapong Wilson, wife of business mogul Kennedy Agyapong. He would later return to Multimedia Group, anchoring at Hitz FM.
Awana was widely recognised for his iconic radio jingle, “3y3 Awana nie oo”, which became his signature across the airwaves.
