Renowned Nigerian televangelist, Pastor Chris Oyakhilome, has stirred new theological reflection with a sermon where he claimed that Jesus Christ never personally said, "The Spirit of the Lord is upon me," contrary to popular belief among Christians.

In a teaching session that has gained attention, Pastor Chris addressed a common scriptural passage — Luke 4:18 — and challenged listeners to reconsider how language and interpretation can impact faith and spiritual progress.

“Jesus didn’t say that,” Pastor Chris began. “He read it.”

Referring to Luke 4:15-21, the passage where Jesus reads from the scroll of the prophet Isaiah in the synagogue at Nazareth, Pastor Chris emphasized that Jesus was reading a prophecy — not making a direct statement about Himself.

“Let’s start from verse 15,” he said. “Jesus taught in their synagogues and was glorified by all. When he got to Nazareth, he stood up to read from the book of Isaiah.”

Pastor Chris went on to explain that the phrase, “The Spirit of the Lord is upon me”, was originally written by Isaiah, and Jesus, during this moment, was simply reading what had already been written — not making a spontaneous, personal proclamation.

“He found the place where it was written,” Pastor Chris said. “He read it, then closed the book and sat down. He didn’t say it; He read it.”

After reading, Jesus told the congregation, “This day is this scripture fulfilled in your ears,” which Pastor Chris pointed out was the true moment of personal revelation — not the reading itself.

He stressed that Christians often adopt language from Scripture without understanding the context, which can unintentionally weaken their faith.

“We use language that constantly erodes our faith,” he warned. “We find ourselves taking one step forward and two steps backward.”

Instead, Pastor Chris encouraged believers to strictly follow how the Scriptures were written and used by Jesus and the apostles. He argued that faith-filled language must align with the intent and structure of Scripture, if one is to live the victorious life promised in the Word.

“I’m always advancing,” he declared. “I can only make progress. That’s the life God has given me.”

The sermon urges a reexamination of common expressions used by believers and preachers alike. According to Pastor Chris, proper interpretation and declaration of the Word is the key to consistent spiritual advancement and personal transformation.

As the message continues to circulate online, reactions have been mixed — with some applauding the deeper exegetical approach, while others argue that Jesus’ reading from Isaiah was indeed a form of self-declaration.
