Collins Appiah, a Ghanaian teacher who also works as an undertaker, has shocked many with a confession that he collects fees from people who wish to see the naked bodies of the deceased during funeral preparations.
Speaking in a widely circulated interview, Appiah disclosed that while performing his routine mortuary duties, he often encounters unusual and disturbing requests. Some mourners secretly approach him, offering money to view the private parts of the dead particularly female corpses. Instead of granting free access, he admits to charging them, claiming this not only discourages such behavior but also provides him with an extra source of income.
The revelation has provoked strong reactions. Many Ghanaians have condemned the practice as a violation of the dignity of the dead, while others argue that it exposes hidden traditions tied to superstition and spiritual beliefs. Appiah insists he does not encourage these requests, but allows them when individuals persist, citing financial hardship as a reason for accepting payment.
According to him, some people believe that seeing a corpse fully unclothed especially someone rumored to have spiritual powers can bring protection, luck, or mystical knowledge. Religious groups, funeral associations, and human rights advocates have criticized the practice and called for tighter regulation of mortuaries to prevent similar abuses and preserve the sanctity of the dead.
