President John Dramani Mahama has pushed back strongly against criticisms from former Vice President Dr Mahamudu Bawumia, who questioned the policy basis for the recent appreciation of the Ghanaian cedi.

Speaking at a high-level engagement with the Ghana Catholic Bishops Conference on Friday, May 23, 2025, President Mahama argued that “effective leadership” is the driving force behind the currency’s recovery and broader economic stabilization.

“Somebody says, point to one policy that you have implemented to make the cedi appreciate, and I said it's not about one policy. The answer is effective leadership,” Mahama stated.

Earlier in the week, Dr Mahamudu Bawumia—speaking to the Young Executive Forum (YEF) in London—challenged the National Democratic Congress (NDC) to name a specific policy responsible for the cedi's recent performance boost.

“If you ask the NDC to point out exactly what policy they have implemented that has resulted in the appreciation of the cedi, they cannot tell you one,” Dr Bawumia asserted.

He credited long-standing NPP initiatives, such as the gold buyback program, for stabilizing Ghana’s economy and currency.

Mahama, however, took a broader view, stressing that his leadership has restored confidence in the economy, governance, and democracy itself.

“With effective leadership, we can turn this economy around and create a better life for our people, and that is what I’m committed to,” he told the bishops.

He further noted that Ghana’s citizens have embraced his vision for renewal and reform:

“Ghanaians had bought into the message, and they believed that I would be able to reset things... Every step I’ve taken is meant to restore the faith of our people in our democracy.”

The ongoing exchange between President Mahama and Dr Bawumia highlights the growing tension between the ruling NDC and opposition NPP as the country gears up for the 2026 general elections.

While the cedi’s recent appreciation is seen as a rare bright spot in Ghana’s economic outlook, the debate over who deserves credit is far from over.
