According to Accra-based Asaase Radio, government officials argue that the probe is part of broader efforts to ensure accountability in the management of state resources.

Throughout Akufo-Addo’s presidency, opposition parties and civil society groups repeatedly raised concerns over the high costs of his international trips.

In 2021, North Tongu MP Samuel Okudzeto Ablakwa accused the former president of spending millions of cedis on luxury chartered flights instead of using Ghana’s state-owned Dassault Falcon 900 EX-Easy presidential jet. The allegations sparked public debate and calls for transparency regarding government spending on foreign travel.

The reported investigation suggests that Mahama’s administration is taking concrete steps to review past expenditures, particularly in areas where public concerns were raised.

As of now, the government has yet to publicly comment on the investigation. It remains unclear what specific details the NIB will be examining or whether any legal consequences could arise from the findings.

However, the development has already reignited discussions about government accountability, prudent fiscal management, and the need for transparency in public office.

With former President Akufo-Addo’s travel expenses under review, many will be watching closely to see how this investigation unfolds and what it could mean for Ghana’s political landscape.
