A devastating fire has struck the Lapaz Market in Accra, sending thick plumes of smoke into the sky and causing widespread panic among traders and shoppers. The incident, confirmed by GhanaWeb, occurred shortly after midday on Sunday, April 27, 2025.

In a video sighted by The Miraspect News, an entire shop can be seen engulfed in menacing flames, with the fire rapidly spreading to nearby shops on the same floor. Shoppers and traders were seen frantically trying to salvage goods as the fire intensified.

As of the time of reporting, the cause of the fire remains unknown. Emergency response teams, including personnel from the Ghana National Fire Service (GNFS), were quickly deployed to the scene to battle the flames and prevent further spread.

Eyewitness accounts suggest that the fire started in one shop before extending to others, but there has been no official statement confirming this. No casualties have yet been reported, but the financial loss is expected to be significant, considering Lapaz Market’s status as a bustling commercial hub in Accra.

Authorities are currently assessing the full extent of the damage while investigating the possible cause of the outbreak. Fire officers are expected to release a preliminary report once the situation is fully under control.

Fires at major markets have, unfortunately, been a recurring challenge in Ghana, often attributed to faulty electrical connections, negligence, or lack of fire safety measures. The latest incident has once again raised concerns about the need for improved infrastructure and better fire prevention systems in public markets.

Several traders who spoke to reporters on the ground expressed deep frustration and heartbreak over the incident, with many losing their entire stock of goods.

"Everything I have worked for is gone," one devastated shop owner said.
"We need answers, and we need support," another trader added.

Calls are growing louder for city authorities and market management to ensure stricter fire safety regulations and regular inspections to prevent such disasters.

For now, affected traders and shop owners are anxiously awaiting further updates from officials regarding any possible relief support or recovery plans.

The Miraspect News will continue to provide updates as more details emerge.
