Minority Leader of Parliament, Alexander Afenyo-Markin, has responded to a viral video capturing a tense moment between him and a police officer during the “Save the Judiciary” protest held on May 5, 2025.

In the footage, the Effutu MP was seen physically confronting a police officer near Jubilee House, which sparked public outrage and debate. However, in a detailed official statement, Afenyo-Markin refuted accusations of aggression, insisting that his actions were in response to an unprovoked assault by the officer involved.

“I write to strongly condemn the reprehensible and disgraceful act of violence perpetrated against me by a uniformed police officer, Constable Forson,” he stated. “This occurred at the entrance of Parliament House during a peaceful and highly successful demonstration.”

According to Afenyo-Markin, the incident happened when he attempted to join fellow political leaders inside Parliament to present a petition. He recounted being called over by the NPP Communications Director, Richard Ahiagbah, when Constable Forson allegedly struck him on the left side of his chest with full force.

“The impact dazed me, and I was visibly shaken and short of breath. In that moment, I spontaneously protested his conduct, asking why he would seek to harm me,” the MP added.

He described how CID officers and other personnel came to his aid, helping him inside where he was forced to lean against a wall for support. A national service personnel also offered him water to help him regain composure.

Following the incident, Afenyo-Markin confirmed that he has filed a formal petition to the Inspector-General of Police (IGP), demanding a full investigation into the behavior of Constable Forson.

“Several senior police officers witnessed the appalling conduct firsthand and can corroborate the events,” he said.

The Minority Leader emphasized that he has always respected the Ghana Police Service and believes this incident falls below the standards expected of law enforcement officers.

“This incident is a disgrace to the standards and professionalism expected of those tasked with protecting citizens, and it must be treated with the contempt it deserves,” he concluded.
