NPP retracts application to ease bail terms, leaving Chairman Wontumi in custody amid ongoing legal and political drama. |
The New Patriotic Party (NPP) has withdrawn its legal application to vary the bail conditions of its embattled Ashanti Regional Chairman, Bernard Antwi-Boasiako, popularly known as Chairman Wontumi, who remains in the custody of the Economic and Organised Crime Office (EOCO) despite fulfilling his bail terms.
Chairman Wontumi has been in EOCO custody since Tuesday, May 27, 2025, following a complex sequence of events involving alleged financial improprieties tied to Akonta Mining, a company linked to him. EOCO granted him bail of GH¢50 million with two sureties to be justified on Wednesday, May 28.
After days of negotiation, Wontumi’s legal team secured the required documentation for bail by Friday, May 30, 2025. Speaking to reporters, lawyer Andy Appiah-Kubi expressed frustration that the filing of a bail variation request by NPP’s Director of Legal Affairs, Gary Nimako Marfo, inadvertently delayed Wontumi’s release.
“I am very grateful to Honourable Bryan Acheampong, who has supported me in providing the documents... But unknown to me, an application was filed that prohibits us from securing his release,” Appiah-Kubi said.
According to reports, Bryan Acheampong, MP for Abetifi and former Minister for Food and Agriculture, provided property documents well above the required value for bail sureties.
The saga began on May 23, when National Investigations Bureau (NIB) operatives raided Wontumi's Kumasi residence with a warrant. The move was met with resistance from a crowd of NPP supporters. Wontumi later turned himself in at the CID headquarters in Accra on May 26, was cautioned and granted bail, but was re-arrested by EOCO on May 27.
The charges against him relate to an alleged $55 million fraud case involving Akonta Mining. Although the NPP has since retracted the application to vary his bail, Wontumi remains in custody as EOCO completes the bail finalisation process.
The political and legal fallout from the case continues to raise eyebrows as observers question the underlying motivations and implications for Ghana’s justice system.
