Former President Kufuor cautions the NPP against division, urging unity to avoid collapse from tribal and religious bias. |
Former President John Agyekum Kufuor has issued a strong warning to the New Patriotic Party (NPP), cautioning that the party risks imploding if it continues down the path of tribal and religious politics.
Speaking at the launch of the NPP's Patriotic Institute in Accra on Wednesday, June 25, 2025, the respected statesman expressed disappointment over recent internal party debates where some individuals opposed the idea of the NPP electing a Muslim flagbearer, arguing such a candidate would not gain Christian support.
"We are democratic and we uphold common humanity. Democracy doesn't go in for tribe, religion and gender," Kufuor asserted.
"If we want power, we want to present a person who will be convincing to the generality of the electorate."
Kufuor described the tribal and religious arguments as a dangerous narrative that, if perpetuated from within the party, would validate longstanding criticisms that the NPP is a tribalistic or exclusive party.
"This day we are even including religion. You do that and it comes from our mouths, then I tell you we are perpetuating it," he warned.
He urged party members to return to the founding values of the NPP — democracy, unity, and national interest — stressing that only a competent, inclusive candidate can win the trust of the broader electorate.
"We must choose a leader who can solve problems for all — not just for one group. That is how to lead a nation, not through division."
