Dr. Afriye says NPP leaders are set to apologize to Mahama following Wontumi’s controversial statements. |
Senior figures within the New Patriotic Party (NPP) are preparing to formally apologize to former President John Dramani Mahama for offensive statements made by the party's Ashanti Regional Chairman, Bernard Antwi Boasiako, popularly known as Chairman Wontumi.
The revelation came from Dr. Nana Ayew Afriye, Member of Parliament for Effiduase-Asokore, during an interview on Channel One TV on Tuesday, June 10, 2025. Dr. Afriye disclosed that the apology is in response to videos of Chairman Wontumi making personal and inflammatory remarks against the former president ahead of the 2024 elections.
“For Chairman Wontumi’s case, we’re going to beg,” Dr. Afriye said. “Even if we have to kneel before President Mahama, we’ll do it. Wontumi crossed the line.”
The apology comes amid a broader controversy as the Economic and Organised Crime Office (EOCO) is currently investigating Chairman Wontumi for alleged financial crimes, including fraud and money laundering. EOCO released him on June 2, 2025, after he satisfied bail conditions. His legal team has since withdrawn a motion to challenge the GH¢50 million bail.

Dr. Afriye hinted that the issue may have been politically influenced, stating that “the hand behind this is bigger than EOCO or intelligence agencies” and suggesting that President Mahama may be indirectly involved.
However, Dr. Afriye also emphasized that Chairman Wontumi has agreed to apologize, admitting that his words were inappropriate and personal, far beyond political rivalry.
“In politics, we can disagree strongly, but personal attacks based on falsehoods must be avoided,” Dr. Afriye stressed, urging the NPP leadership to address the issue with humility and sincerity.
This move is seen as a step toward reducing political tension and promoting mutual respect between opposing parties, especially ahead of the 2028 general elections.
