The National Sports Authority (NSA) has placed an indefinite ban on boxing events in Ghana following the sudden death of Ernest Akushey, the fighter fans knew as “Bahubali.”
Akushey died Tuesday morning, days after his September 12 bout with Jacob Dickson at the Bukom Boxing Arena.
The fight ended in a stoppage, with doctors later confirming internal bleeding.
“This reflects our joint commitment with the Sports Ministry to protect the safety, health, and welfare of athletes,” the NSA said in a statement, adding that investigations into the tragedy are already underway.
The directive calls on all promoters, coaches, athletes, and supporters to comply as the sport undergoes a safety review.
The suspension also comes in the shadow of another blow to Ghana boxing, Gabriel Aluwasegun’s death in April after a fight.
