Hon. Afenyo-Markin took GHC 500,000 loan from us but has refused to pay – Acting MASLOC CEO claims

The Acting Chief Executive Officer of the Microfinance and Small Loans Centre (MASLOC), Abigail Akwambea Elorm Mensah, has alleged that the Minority Leader and Member of Parliament for Efutu, Alexander Afenyo-Markin, is among individuals who have failed to repay loans secured from the government agency.

Speaking in an interview on Radio Gold, Madam Mensah disclosed that Honourable Afenyo-Markin took about GH¢500,000 on behalf of people in his constituency but has not settled the repayment obligations tied to the facility.

"Honourable Afenyo-Markin took about GH¢500,000 for people in his district. On my list, his name is listed, along with another gentleman, probably the leader, I believe he is the former Chairman of the NPP in the Efutu constituency," she stated.

The MASLOC boss explained that efforts to retrieve the loan have proven difficult, as intermediaries involved claim they were only acting under the MP’s directive.

"So, I personally spoke to the person and asked him, ‘Your people are not paying back the money.

"What is happening?’ And he said that, as for him, he was just the agent. Honourable told him to take the money and gave him the list of people to distribute it to. That is what he did," Madam Mensah recounted.

According to her, the situation suggests that some beneficiaries may not have even been aware that the funds were loans requiring repayment.

"So, in this case, the people may not know that they are supposed to pay it back," she added.

MASLOC, established to provide micro and small loans to support businesses, has in recent times intensified efforts to recover funds from defaulters across the country.

The agency has maintained that such loans are not grants and must be repaid to ensure others can benefit.
