The Ashanti Regional Fire Command spearheaded the firefighting efforts, demonstrating unwavering determination despite facing intense heat and structural obstacles. Their relentless efforts have earned praise from the Ghana National Fire Service (GNFS), which acknowledged their hard work in a statement:
“Well done Ashanti Regional Fire Command. You have done what Napoleon couldn’t do.”
Firefighting teams encountered multiple challenges, including the need to halt operations temporarily to allow excavators to create access routes for an efficient response.
However, a controversy arose following remarks by Ashanti Regional Minister Dr. Frank Amoakohene. A viral video showed the Minister instructing firefighters to move their engines if they insisted on having a standby tanker to supply water.
In response, Ashanti Regional Fire Commander ACFO II Peter Tetteh condemned the Minister’s remarks, calling them “unfair and unfortunate.” He noted that such comments demoralized the firefighters, who had been battling the flames tirelessly.
“We have been fighting this fire for 24 hours without rest. We should be applauded and encouraged, not criticized,” he stated.
Acting Chief Fire Officer Daniella Mawusi Ntow Sapong strongly condemned reports of attacks on firefighters at the scene, emphasizing that investigations were underway to hold those responsible accountable.
“Understanding the challenges firefighters face will foster greater public support for fire safety efforts and help prevent future incidents,” she stressed.
Additionally, she assured full medical support for two injured firefighters and a civilian who sustained injuries during the firefighting efforts.
Authorities have cautioned the public against entering compromised structures in the affected area, as some buildings may no longer be structurally sound.
ACFO II Tetteh urged city authorities to swiftly implement recommendations from the upcoming fire incident report to enhance fire safety measures and prevent similar disasters in the future.
