Lands Minister urges the creation of a special court to quickly prosecute those involved in illegal mining |
In an exclusive interview with JoyNews on Wednesday, March 19, 2025, Mr. Buah emphasized the urgency of the matter, revealing that both the Attorney General and the Chief Justice have responded positively to his proposal.
"I'm looking for a day, and I'm happy that I got a good reception from the Attorney General. I believe the time has come for us to set up a fast-track court to try and prosecute those engaging in the destruction of our forest reserves," he stated.
When asked whether he had formally engaged key legal authorities, the minister confirmed that discussions had already taken place at the highest levels of Ghana’s justice system.
"In fact, not only the Attorney General—I’ve also gone to the Chief Justice, and she was very receptive. The Attorney General was very receptive, and we have had very good discussions about that. I believe this is where we've gotten to," he disclosed.
Mr. Buah further explained that the Ministry of Lands and Natural Resources does not have direct enforcement powers, making collaboration with other institutions essential in the fight against illegal mining and deforestation.
According to the minister, tackling illegal activities in Ghana’s forests requires a coordinated approach involving multiple government agencies, including the police, army, and judiciary.
"This ministry can only work when we get the support from all these agencies. We don’t have the army, we don’t have the police.
We have these policies, and we rely on all these agencies to give us support. So far, I think the reception has been good," he added.
The establishment of a specialized court is expected to expedite prosecutions and strengthen Ghana’s fight against:
✅ Illegal mining (galamsey)
✅ Illegal logging
✅ Deforestation
✅ Encroachment on protected lands
The call for a fast-track judicial process comes amid growing concerns over the devastation of Ghana’s forests, which are being rapidly depleted due to illegal human activities.
If implemented, the fast-track court will help deliver swift justice and deter environmental crimes, ensuring stricter enforcement of forest protection laws.
As discussions progress, stakeholders will be watching to see whether this initiative will translate into concrete action, bringing much-needed accountability to those responsible for Ghana’s environmental degradation.
