A power outage at Kotoka International Airport leaves passengers stranded for nearly an hour |
A viral video on X (formerly Twitter) showed passengers standing by their luggage trolleys, waiting for the power to be restored so flights and check-in processes could resume. The airport announcer could be heard addressing the travelers, but the details of the announcement remain unknown as the video ended before further information was shared.
While reports indicate that power was eventually restored, it is unclear how long the full recovery process took or whether flights were delayed or canceled.
The recurring power outages, commonly referred to as "dumsor", have plagued businesses and households in Ghana for years. The John Mahama-led government, which assumed office on January 7, 2025, had promised to resolve the country’s power issues. However, since then, several power cuts have been recorded, including the March 21, 2025, Adum Market fire, which was allegedly triggered by an outage.
A trader affected by the fire blamed the government and the Electricity Company of Ghana (ECG) for their failure to stabilize the power supply, though no official report has confirmed the cause of the fire.
The KIA power outage has sparked widespread discussions on social media, with many Ghanaians expressing disappointment over the lack of stable electricity at one of the country’s most important infrastructure facilities. Some criticized the government, while others called for urgent investment in reliable power solutions to prevent future occurrences.
As Ghana continues to battle dumsor, concerns are growing over its impact on critical sectors, businesses, and national security. Will the government take decisive action to resolve the power crisis once and for all?
