During a meeting with the Ghana Bar Association (GBA) on March 26, 2025, President Mahama stressed his openness to working with the legal fraternity, encouraging collaboration to strengthen justice and democratic governance.

Addressing concerns about a strained relationship between his administration and the Judiciary, the President firmly rejected such notions.

"Government is open to working with you, particularly on our side of the political divide. There’s this perception that we have a problem with the legal fraternity and things like that," Mahama stated.

He further emphasized that his government comprises individuals, including Attorney General Marietta Brew Appiah-Oppong, who respect the legal profession and are eager to engage constructively with it.

"If you look at the kind of people, Marietta and all of us sitting here, we’re not people who have any such animosity toward the judiciary and the legal fraternity. So our doors are open," he assured.

Mahama encouraged members of the Ghana Bar Association to actively scrutinize and critique government policies, arguing that a strong legal fraternity enhances democratic governance and accountability.

Additionally, he urged the Bar Association to participate in the ongoing constitutional review process, noting that their legal expertise is invaluable in shaping Ghana’s legal framework.

The meeting highlighted the need for greater cooperation between the executive and the judiciary, as well as continued reforms to improve access to justice. President Mahama’s remarks signal his commitment to working with all stakeholders, despite past criticisms from his party regarding certain judicial decisions.

As Ghana continues to navigate legal and constitutional reforms, the engagement between the government and the judiciary is expected to play a crucial role in maintaining judicial independence and the rule of law.
