Sammy Gyamfi Slams NPP for 'Political Theatrics' Over Amin Adam’s 'Sakawa Budget' Criticism |
According to Gyamfi, who also serves as the National Communications Officer of the National Democratic Congress (NDC), the criticisms from the NPP regarding the budget are mere attempts to energize their party base rather than substantive economic discourse.
He expressed that the behavior of several NPP legislators during the budget presentation suggested that they had lost confidence in their own party’s future, signaling a potential collapse of the NPP.
Gyamfi’s comments follow remarks made by former Finance Minister Dr. Mohammed Amin Adam Antah, who labeled the budget as a “sakawa budget,” implying deception. However, speaking exclusively on TV3’s New Day on Wednesday, March 12, 2025, Gyamfi dismissed these claims, stating that the opposition was overwhelmed by the budget’s bold reforms.
“They are completely dumbfounded by the details of this budget. They have been totally silenced but they just have to pull up some theatrics to ginger their party base,” he remarked.
Gyamfi, who was present at the budget reading in Parliament, described the mood among NPP MPs as one of despair. “Yesterday, I was sitting at the gallery and from the look on the faces of some of their MPs, it was like, ‘our party will collapse,’” he added.
Prior to the budget presentation, Gyamfi had assured Ghanaians that the fiscal policy outlined by the government would directly address their needs and expectations. He emphasized that the administration is committed to its campaign promises and is focused on bringing economic relief to the people.
“Aban papa aba (a better government is here),” he confidently stated. “The change we voted for is here. The hope the people of this country need is here, and I’m very optimistic that by the time the Finance Minister is done reading this budget, many Ghanaians will find hope in his words.”
Responding to concerns regarding the feasibility of implementing tax cuts while sustaining government revenue, Gyamfi reassured the public that the administration had carefully planned its policies.
“The promises we have made, including the abolition of certain taxes, were well thought through before being announced. That is why we are confident about their implementation,” he explained.
Following what many have described as a turbulent economic period under the previous NPP administration, expectations are high for the NDC-led government to execute its economic reset mantra effectively. The proposed budget outlines the removal of multiple taxes introduced by the past administration, subject to parliamentary approval.
The government believes these tax cuts will stimulate economic activity, alleviate financial burdens on businesses and citizens, and ultimately restore confidence in the country’s economic trajectory.
With the budget promising to address critical issues and provide much-needed relief, Ghanaians now await the parliamentary deliberations that will determine the fate of these proposed reforms.
