In a devastating turn of events, over 40 houses in Kelee, a coastal community in the Weija Gbawe Municipality of the Greater Accra Region, have been completely swallowed by the sea, leaving many residents in distress and uncertainty about their future. The rising tides have steadily eroded the coastline, forcing numerous families to abandon their homes and seek shelter elsewhere.

Residents of Kelee have been vocal about their growing fears, as many face
displacement with no alternative housing options. According to reports from Channel
One News, the worsening situation has already compelled several school
children to travel daily to the nearby town of Wiaboman for
their education, as their own schools have been destroyed by the encroaching
sea.

Joseph Addy, one of the remaining residents whose house is at risk, shared
his distressing experience:
“Where I live now is gradually being washed away by the sea. Buildings that
once stood near mine have disappeared, and I know it’s only a matter of time
before my house is gone too.”
He further explained that during high tide, seawater enters his home,
sometimes even seeping through the windows. “I am afraid because I have nowhere
to go with my kids, and as a man, my strength has reduced. I don’t have money
to rent a new place. We are managing, but we plead with the government to help
us.”

The residents of Kelee are not the only ones in the Greater Accra Region
struggling with the devastating effects of coastal erosion. Several coastal
communities in Ghana have been grappling with the consequences of climate
change, including severe tidal waves and rising sea levels that continue to erode
the coastline.
The Acting Chief Executive of the Precious Minerals Marketing
Company (PMMC), Sammy Gyamfi, has also raised concerns about the
plight of the affected residents, stating that the current government needs to
prioritize coastal defense projects to protect livelihoods and prevent further
destruction.

Additionally, the former Finance Minister, Dr. Mohammed Amin Adam Antah, acknowledged the severity of the issue, expressing hope that urgent government intervention would prevent further disaster.
Residents like Joseph Addy, whose house is on the verge of
collapse, are pleading for immediate help. He shared his fears with Channel One
News, stating:
“Right now, the sea is getting closer to my house. I have nowhere to go with
my kids, and my strength has reduced. I don’t have money to rent a new place.
We are managing, but we plead with the government to help us.”

Meanwhile, the situation in Kelee has put a significant strain on residents, particularly those who have lost their homes and now struggle to find shelter. Affected families are calling on the government to expedite action on coastal protection measures to prevent further destruction.
Joseph Addy, a resident whose home is on the brink of being consumed by the
rising sea levels, has echoed the community’s growing concerns.
“The buildings are getting washed away day by day. My home is still
standing, but for how long? If the government does not intervene soon, many of
us will lose everything,” he said.

The municipal assembly has reportedly been monitoring the situation, but
residents say action must be taken before the entire community is lost
to the sea. Several individuals and local leaders are advocating for a
permanent sea defense system to protect Kelee and other
vulnerable coastal areas from further erosion.
