Rising Security Threats
Speaking at the inauguration of the Ninth Parliamentary Service Board, Bagbin emphasized the urgent need to secure the premises, stating that lawmakers and staff remain vulnerable to security breaches.
“One of the challenges that need to be addressed is securing the parliamentary enclave to ensure the safety of members and staff,” Bagbin stated.
He revealed that security breaches have become increasingly frequent, exposing MPs and staff to external threats.
“This has been a worrying matter for Parliament for some time now; we are actually insecure here,” he added.
Parliament’s Growing Vulnerability
The Speaker recounted instances where unauthorized individuals infiltrated parliamentary grounds, posing risks to lawmakers and personnel.
“We are not safe. Sometimes people can come in and attack us or staff, and anytime there is an attempt to apprehend them, they scale over the wall and escape into the forest,” Bagbin disclosed.
He stressed that a secure parliamentary environment is crucial for MPs to carry out their duties effectively without fear.
“This is vital for the functioning of Parliament,” he emphasized.
Urgent Call for Action
Bagbin expressed confidence that the Ninth Parliamentary Service Board would work diligently to improve security and implement protective measures.
“I believe the Ninth Board will work assiduously to make this a reality,” he stated.
He also urged House leaders to take immediate action, ensuring stronger security for MPs, staff, and visitors.
“I will call on the leaders of the house to follow up on this matter,” he concluded.
With security concerns mounting, there is growing pressure on Parliament to act swiftly, reinforcing protection measures to safeguard lawmakers and staff from potential threats.
