James Klutse Avedzi Urges Attorney General To Prosecute Officials Implicated In Auditor General’s Reports

Former Chairman of Parliament’s Public Accounts Committee (PAC), James Klutse Avedzi, has called on the Attorney General to expedite the prosecution of public officials found culpable in the Auditor General’s reports for misappropriating state funds.

Avedzi calls on the Attorney General to take legal action against officials implicated in audit reports

Avedzi, now the Director General of the Securities and Exchanges Commission (SEC), expressed concern that many of these cases have been left unresolved despite clear evidence warranting legal action.

Speaking on Joy News’ PM Express Business Edition, Avedzi noted that the Attorney General has a significant backlog of cases that need immediate attention.

“The current Attorney General has a lot to do because if we look at PAC’s recommendations in the past, the number of people he must prosecute is many,” he said.

He stressed that while some cases might require further investigation, most of the officials cited in PAC reports have already undergone rigorous scrutiny and have failed to provide satisfactory explanations for the financial irregularities flagged by the Auditor General.

“For the Public Accounts Committee report, the issues are clear. The Auditor General has done extensive work and made specific recommendations. The PAC has also interrogated the officials involved, and their explanations have not been convincing. These individuals must be prosecuted—it’s very simple,” Avedzi stated.

Avedzi argued that there is no excuse for delaying these cases, as the Attorney General can easily access the necessary documents and evidence.

“It is for him to call for those reports from Parliament. If he contacts the Clerk of the Public Accounts Committee, he can obtain the reports. Or he can access the Hansard of Parliament, which contains Parliament’s decisions on these cases,” he explained.

To further support prosecution efforts, he assured that the Auditor General’s team is ready to provide evidence in court.

“The Auditor General’s staff are fully prepared, as they have the working papers for all the audits they conducted.
If called upon to provide evidence in court, they are ready to defend the reports and support the legal process.”

With millions of cedis in misappropriated funds at stake, Avedzi emphasized the urgent need for accountability.

“The number of cases is huge, and the Attorney General has a lot to do,” he warned.

Failure to take action, he cautioned, will only embolden more corruption within the public sector.

His call aligns with increasing public pressure for greater transparency, accountability, and prosecution of corrupt officials to deter financial mismanagement in Ghana’s governance system.
