🔥 Nana B Alleges Plot To Remove EC Chair After Chief Justice’s Suspension

/ NPP National Organiser warns of a coordinated effort to unseat key constitutional officers under Mahama's administration

👉 Jean Mensa was appointed Chair of the EC in 2018 by former President Nana Akufo-Addo.

👉 She oversaw the controversial 2020 and 2024 elections, both of which were challenged by the opposition at various stages.

👉 Her potential removal would mark a major shake-up in Ghana’s electoral infrastructure ahead of the 2028 general elections.

The National Organiser of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), Henry Nana Boakye, popularly known as Nana B, has alleged that the Electoral Commission (EC) is next in line for political targeting following the suspension of Chief Justice Gertrude Araba Torkornoo.

NPP’s Nana B claims there’s a scheme to oust the Electoral Commission Chair after the CJ’s suspension.

Speaking in an interview on Adom FM on Monday, April 28, 2025, Nana B claimed that the current government, led by President John Dramani Mahama, is laying the groundwork to remove Jean Mensa, Chairperson of the Electoral Commission, along with her deputies.

"We have intel that they have already written a petition for the removal of the electoral commissioner(s). What they are waiting for is to finish with the Chief Justice. As soon as they are done, they will let the people who wrote the Electoral Commission petitions bring them," he alleged.

Nana B’s claims follow the recent suspension of Chief Justice Gertrude Torkornoo, after the presidency announced a prima facie case had been established regarding three petitions filed against her. A five-member committee, led by Supreme Court Justice Gabriel Pwamang, has been constituted to investigate the matter.

The NPP leader warned that if the government proceeds to target the Electoral Commission next, it would set a troubling precedent for Ghana’s democracy.

"This is a dangerous path the NDC wants to lead us down," Nana B said in the local Twi language. "All well-meaning Ghanaians must rise up. Ghana was not sold to His Excellency President Mahama... we voted, and he received an overwhelming endorsement."

Nana B implied that the Mahama-led government is systematically attempting to remove constitutional officers perceived to be independent or unfavorable to the ruling party’s interests.

The Electoral Commission, led by Jean Mensa since 2018, has been a frequent subject of political debate, especially during and after the 2020 and 2024 general elections. While the NDC has raised concerns over the EC's transparency and neutrality in past polls, the NPP has largely defended the commission’s performance.

This allegation by Nana B has further intensified political tensions following the Chief Justice’s suspension — a move that has already sparked concerns over judicial independence. President Mahama has maintained that the action is in full accordance with Article 146(6) of Ghana’s Constitution, which governs the process for investigating superior court judges.

The Presidency has not officially responded to the NPP organiser’s claims. However, observers anticipate heightened scrutiny over any future moves concerning the Electoral Commission and other constitutional bodies.
