According to a statement issued by the Volta Regional Police Public Affairs Unit, the interception took place at Tadzewu-Mitsrikasa Police Barrier on Friday, April 18, 2025, around 3:30 a.m. during a routine inspection of a Hyundai bus en route from Accra to Benin.

What Was Found?

  • 60 cartons of AAA cartridges — estimated 15,000 rounds

  • 72 cartons of BB cartridges — estimated 18,000 rounds

  • Concealed in sacks under passengers' luggage

Arrests & Investigation

Two men were arrested:

  • Driver: Abasou Fousseni, 45

  • Co-driver: Salisu Jalilu, 38

Both denied knowledge of the concealed weapons. However, preliminary investigations suggest that the co-driver secretly loaded the ammunition into the bus.

  • The driver has been granted police enquiry bail to continue transporting passengers to their destination.

  • The co-driver remains in police custody and will be arraigned in court on Tuesday, April 22, 2025.

Cross-Border Threat?

The route and destination—Benin via the Volta Region—have raised alarm over potential illicit arms trafficking networks across West Africa.

Police have urged the public to remain vigilant and report any suspicious activities, especially in border regions.

Official Police Statement Excerpt:

“The firearms were loaded in sacks and concealed under some luggage… Investigation has commenced to uncover the source and intended destination of the ammunition.”
