Popular Nigerian televangelist and founder of Christ Embassy, Pastor Chris Oyakhilome, has ignited fresh controversy by alleging that the late Pope Francis died due to complications from receiving the COVID-19 vaccine. His claims, made during a recent sermon, have since gone viral, triggering widespread backlash and renewed calls for action against vaccine misinformation.
In the video, Oyakhilome criticized the late Pope for publicly encouraging vaccination efforts back in 2020, quoting the pontiff's words: "If Jesus were here, he would have taken the vaccine." The pastor described the statement as “very insulting” and accused the Pope of aligning himself with “globalists” promoting what he believes to be a harmful agenda.
According to Oyakhilome, the Pope's health had deteriorated after taking the vaccine, leading ultimately to his death.
"At that time, he was still with the globalists. He believed them and encouraged the world to take the vaccine. And he, too, took the vaccine. But he's not been well for a long time. And I'm stating that he was killed by the vaccine," Oyakhilome claimed.
The televangelist further asserted that the reported cause of death—stroke and heart failure—was a cover-up, alleging that vaccine-induced blood clots were to blame.
"The vaccine killed him. They said he had a stroke. Where did the stroke come from? Blood clots; one of the most common causes of death from the vaccine," he added.

Medical experts and public health officials have strongly refuted Oyakhilome’s claims. Health authorities maintain that COVID-19 vaccines are overwhelmingly safe and that adverse events such as fatal blood clots are extremely rare. The Vatican confirmed that Pope Francis, who was 88 years old, passed away from natural causes linked to age-related health complications.
This is not the first time Oyakhilome has been accused of spreading misinformation. During the COVID-19 pandemic, he falsely linked the virus to 5G technology, promoted the debunked theory that mRNA vaccines alter DNA, and was fined £125,000 ($155,000) by the UK's Ofcom for broadcasting misleading and harmful COVID-19 content.
Despite numerous scientific studies proving the safety and efficacy of vaccines, Oyakhilome doubled down during his sermon, insisting that vaccines "have never worked" and alleging that they are part of a broader "plan for death" orchestrated by global elites.
"I also told you no vaccine is good. Not one of them. And they have never worked. It's always been a deception," he declared.
Health experts warn that misinformation like Oyakhilome’s poses a serious threat to public health, especially in communities where trust in vaccines remains fragile. Fact-checkers have urged the public to rely on verified medical sources and not to fall for unproven, dangerous claims.
