Rev. Kofi Oduro calls on President Mahama to dismiss Tamale hospital staff for striking and mismanagement. |
Renowned Ghanaian preacher, Rev Kofi Oduro, founder of Alabaster International Ministries, has called on President John Dramani Mahama to dismiss the entire staff of the Tamale Teaching Hospital (TTH) following a public altercation between hospital management and the Minister of Health, Kwabena Mintah Akandoh.
Rev Oduro's comments come in the wake of an incident where the Health Minister, during a surprise inspection, uncovered serious deficiencies at the TTH, a major referral hospital serving the five Northern Regions of Ghana.
During the inspection, critical medical equipment, including ventilators, diagnostic machines, sterilisation equipment, and MRI scanners, were found to be non-functional, sparking grave concerns about service delivery at the facility.
When confronted about the state of the hospital, TTH officials engaged in a heated argument with the minister and his entourage, including Tamale North MP Alhassan Sayibu Suhuyini. The confrontation, which was captured on video, triggered widespread public backlash and debate on social media platforms.
Following the dispute, the doctors at the facility declared an indefinite strike, demanding apologies from both Minister Akandoh and MP Suhuyini for what they described as disrespectful treatment.
In response, President Mahama took swift action, sacking Dr Adam Atiku, the CEO of the Tamale Teaching Hospital, just days after the incident.
However, Rev Kofi Oduro believes the president’s intervention should not stop there. Speaking passionately during a church service, he labelled the conduct of the hospital staff as "unprofessional" and indicative of deeper systemic incompetence.

"At a place at Tamale Teaching Hospital, where people cannot even manage a toilet, and they are calling on the minister to come and apologise to them... What nonsense. What kind of impunity is this? What kind of madness is this?" he fumed.
He then made a direct appeal to the president:
"I call on His Excellency the President. Good morning, Your Excellency. I believe every staff member of that hospital must be sacked immediately. With all due respect, Your Excellency."
The Tamale Teaching Hospital, a critical health facility for northern Ghana, has been under scrutiny for years regarding resource management, patient care standards, and infrastructure maintenance.
While some Ghanaians agree with Rev Oduro’s stance, arguing that bold reforms are needed to restore public trust in healthcare delivery, others caution against mass dismissals, citing the risk of further destabilising an already strained health system.
As the debate intensifies, many are watching closely to see if President Mahama will heed the clergyman’s call for broader action at TTH.
