The legal team representing Chairman Bernard Antwi Boasiako, popularly known as Chairman Wontumi, has confirmed that the embattled Ashanti Regional Chairman of the New Patriotic Party (NPP) has been hospitalised following his arrest by state security officers.

In a press briefing, Andy Appiah-Kubi, NPP Member of Parliament and legal counsel to Wontumi, stated that his client fell ill during interrogation and had to be transferred to a medical facility.

“My client has been taken to the hospital for medical treatment,” Appiah-Kubi confirmed.
“We haven’t finished with the interrogation. We’ll continue once doctors clear him.”

Wontumi’s arrest has been described by several NPP leaders as politically motivated. He had initially honoured an invitation to appear at the CID Headquarters, where he was being questioned by police.

However, NPP officials allege that Wontumi was later whisked away by masked, heavily armed officers, sparking alarm among party faithful.

Although the specific allegations remain undisclosed, Appiah-Kubi confirmed that “some allegations were preferred,” and Wontumi had responded before his health condition worsened.

Adding another dimension to the developing case, Appiah-Kubi revealed that Exim Bank served Wontumi with a writ of summons earlier that same day, indicating a civil legal action separate from the criminal investigation.

“We received a writ of summons from Exim Bank this afternoon. We will respond in court,” he said.
“We are very hopeful that we’ll be able to mount a defence.”

The lawyer stressed the distinction between the two matters, saying:

“We consider the Exim Bank issue a civil matter, and that’s how we will respond.”

The NPP has condemned the entire episode as an act of political intimidation, with National Organiser Henry Nana Boakye drawing parallels to Ghana’s “dark political past.”

The party has vowed to remain cooperative with the legal process while continuing to challenge any abuse of power.

“We believe in the rule of law, and we are cooperating. But we will not be cowed into silence,” Appiah-Kubi stated.
