πŸ‘‰ Compliance Warning: GPRTU members who fail to implement the new fares will face disciplinary action from the Union.

The GPRTU announces a 15% reduction in transport fares nationwide effective May 24 to
ease financial pressure.

In a major relief for commuters, the Ghana Private Road Transport Union (GPRTU) has announced a 15% reduction in transport fares, effective Saturday, May 24, 2025. The decision follows a meeting between the Union's National Executive and the Minister of Transport, prompted by improved economic indicators and a drop in fuel prices.

The GPRTU cited a favorable exchange rate and an 18% reduction in fuel prices as key factors influencing the fare cut.

GPRTU PRO Abbas Ibrahim Moro, speaking to Citi News, explained that although the Union typically calculates fare adjustments using a third of fuel price fluctuations, they’ve gone further this time to ease the burden on passengers.

“We normally use one-third of the fuel price reduction to adjust fares, but we opted for 15% this time,” he noted.
“We expect other sectors, like the spare parts industry, to also reduce prices.”

He emphasized the Union’s proactive stance, stating that they didn’t wait for other operational costs to fall before implementing the new fares.
