Kumasi's Krofrom area was thrown into panic and chaos on Friday afternoon after a cargo truck lost control and crashed into several vehicles along a busy stretch of road. The accident reportedly occurred shortly after a heavy downpour, leaving roads slick and visibility poor.

Eyewitnesses said the truck, which was descending from the Krofrom traffic light en route to Ashtown, lost control just before reaching the X5 Pub. It plowed through both commercial and private vehicles, including popular minibuses (trotros) and tricycles, locally known as pragia.

“It was terrifying,” recounted one eyewitness. “I saw a woman lying motionless in front of the X5 Pub after falling off a pragia. Some cars were overturned, others had people trapped inside. I couldn’t believe what I was seeing.”

According to initial reports, over ten people sustained injuries, ranging from fractured limbs to deep cuts. Many of the victims were passengers and pedestrians caught in the path of the out-of-control truck.

Swift action from bystanders and good Samaritans helped extract victims from crushed vehicles. Emergency responders soon arrived, and the injured were quickly transported to Komfo Anokye Teaching Hospital and Tafo Government Hospital for urgent treatment.

Police authorities have since cordoned off the area and launched an investigation into the cause of the crash. Preliminary suspicion points to mechanical failure or brake malfunction, worsened by wet road conditions.

The accident has reignited public concern over road safety, especially in hilly, accident-prone zones like Krofrom. Residents are calling for better traffic controls, functional drainage systems to prevent road flooding, and stricter inspections of cargo vehicles.
