Alexander Afenyo-Markin summoned for questioning over alleged assault linked to Save The Judiciary demonstration. |
The Ghana Police Service has officially invited the Minority Leader of Parliament, Alexander Afenyo-Markin, to assist with investigations into an incident that occurred during the Save the Judiciary demonstration in Accra on Monday, May 5, 2025.
According to a press statement released by the police, the invitation follows the emergence of video footage that appears to show the Effutu MP physically confronting a young police officer, identified as Constable Forson, during the demonstration. The footage has since gone viral, prompting widespread public discourse and calls for accountability.
The police stated that they have formally written to the Speaker of Parliament, Rt. Hon. Alban Bagbin, to seek the release of Afenyo-Markin so that he can assist with their investigation.
“We have taken note of several videos circulating on social media, which appear to show the Honourable Member assaulting an officer. We have initiated processes to investigate the matter and have requested his cooperation,” the statement read.
While the video footage has stirred public debate, Afenyo-Markin has issued a statement denying any wrongdoing, stating that his reaction was a reflexive response after being struck in the chest without provocation by Constable Forson.

“As I approached the barricade near Parliament House, Constable Forson hit me on the left side of my chest with full force. I was dazed and short of breath,” Afenyo-Markin recounted in his statement.
“I protested in the moment, but this narrative has been skewed to present me as the aggressor, which I categorically deny.”
He further described the impact as severe, stating that he had to be assisted by CID officers and a national service personnel to regain his composure inside Parliament premises.
In light of the conflicting accounts, the Ghana Police Service has invited both Afenyo-Markin and Constable Forson to provide their versions of the event. The MP has also filed a formal complaint with the Inspector-General of Police (IGP), demanding a full investigation into what he called a “disgraceful act of violence” by a uniformed officer.
“I have always respected the Ghana Police Service and continue to believe in the rule of law. This incident must be investigated thoroughly,” he noted.
