Pastor Chris Oyakhilome, founder of LoveWorld Inc. (Christ Embassy), has urged Christians to stop copying the tongues of others, stressing that true tongues are inspired utterances from the Holy Spirit—not from the mind.

“If you copy someone else’s tongues, it's not from your spirit or the Holy Spirit. It's from your mind because you memorized it,” Pastor Chris said.

He clarified that speaking in tongues is not about repeating what others say but about allowing the Holy Spirit to give you utterance, as mentioned in Acts 2:4:

“And they were all filled with the Holy Ghost, and began to speak with other tongues, as the Spirit gave them utterance.”

Pastor Chris explained that when a believer copies what another person is saying, the language is being processed through their mind, making it a product of mental recall rather than spiritual flow.

“Those of us who speak in tongues don’t pick what we say from our minds. It comes from our spirits, inspired by the Holy Spirit,” he added.

He encouraged believers to learn how to look within, to contact their human spirit, and to connect their vocal organs to their spirits—a phrase he clarified should not be misunderstood.

“Don’t get stuck on the word connect. It’s simply an act of faith,” he said.

Just like receiving salvation by confessing Jesus as Lord, speaking in tongues is activated by believing and acting on God’s Word.

He concluded by emphasizing that speaking in tongues, like salvation, is not a result of emotion or mental logic, but a spiritual response:

“You believed that God raised Jesus from the dead, you confessed Him as Lord, and you received eternal life. The same way, when you act on the Word, the tongues will flow.”
