In a dramatic escalation of Ghana’s ongoing political and legal saga, Ken Ofori-Atta, the former Minister of Finance, has once again been declared a wanted person by the Office of the Special Prosecutor (OSP). The move comes after Ofori-Atta reportedly failed to respond to multiple invitations to appear for questioning in person.

Frank Davies, Ofori-Atta’s lawyer and Chairman of the Constitutional and Legal Affairs Committee of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), responded defiantly during an interview on JoyNews on June 2, 2025.

“He has always been in the process of triggering extradition… So he should start and carry it out,” Davies said, calling the OSP’s actions political theatre.

According to Davies, the OSP has overstepped its legal bounds by downplaying the seriousness of Ofori-Atta’s medical condition, which had previously been cited as the reason for his absence and a request for virtual interrogation.

“The Special Prosecutor should stick to his core duties as a lawyer… I don’t know when he became a medical practitioner,” Davies stated, rebuking Kissi Agyebeng, the current Special Prosecutor.

In a press conference, Special Prosecutor Kissi Agyebeng confirmed that a Red Notice — a request for international cooperation in locating and arresting a wanted person — had been triggered through Interpol. Agyebeng defended his office’s insistence on in-person questioning, arguing that patience had been exhausted after repeated delays since February.

“If we were amenable to taking any statement from Ken Ofori-Atta in absentia, we would have done so in February,” Agyebeng explained, adding that his office will no longer entertain delays.

This development places the former Finance Minister at the centre of both national legal scrutiny and potential international extradition proceedings. The accusations remain undisclosed, but Ofori-Atta is believed to be involved in investigations relating to corruption and abuse of office during his tenure.

As political and legal tempers flare, the saga raises significant questions about the separation of law and politics, the limits of prosecutorial discretion, and the health rights of high-profile suspects under investigation.
