In a public message that acknowledges the financial strain on Ghanaians, the Acting Chief Executive Officer of the National Petroleum Authority (NPA), Godwin Edudzi Tameklo, has appealed for national patience following the rollout of a GH¢1 per litre petroleum levy.

Taking to his official Facebook page on June 5, 2025, Tameklo addressed growing public concern, stating,

“This is painful, but it is necessary. Please bear with us. We beg you.”

He emphasized that the decision was not taken lightly, but was a strategic move to stabilize the fuel supply chain, create national fuel reserves, and promote sustainable energy solutions for the future.

According to Tameklo, the petroleum sector faces increasing pressure due to economic volatility and global fuel market shifts. The GH¢1 levy, though controversial, is seen by the government as a proactive solution to avoid supply disruptions, reduce fuel import dependency, and strengthen local infrastructure.

He assured the public that the revenue from the levy will be handled transparently, with mechanisms in place for accountability and regular public updates.

“We are committed to using these funds responsibly. Systems are in place to ensure that the public is informed and engaged in this national process,” he added.

The levy is also part of Ghana’s broader energy strategy to enhance resilience and bolster national energy security in the face of regional and global uncertainties.
