The Global Security for Africa Research and Good Governance (GLOSARGG) has issued a strong call to action to the Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS) and the African Union (AU) to immediately step in and help de-escalate the growing political crisis in Togo.

The appeal comes in the wake of violent protests from June 26–27, 2025, that left at least seven people dead and over 60 injured. The protests erupted in response to worsening economic hardship, alleged suppression of civil liberties, and a controversial constitutional amendment that strengthens President Faure Gnassingbé’s grip on power, potentially enabling indefinite rule.

GLOSARGG, in a statement signed by Executive Secretary Francis Ahovi, condemned the reported use of excessive force by security forces and warned that the situation could spiral into a full-blown internal conflict.

“Militarised repression, particularly when directed at largely peaceful demonstrators, creates an environment ripe for radicalisation,” the statement read. “Trust in state institutions is weakening, especially among young people who feel excluded from national decision-making.”

The group raised concerns about the broader regional impact, cautioning that the unrest in Togo could spill over into neighbouring countries such as Ghana, Benin, and Burkina Faso, potentially opening corridors for arms trafficking, population displacement, and insurgent activity.

📌 GLOSARGG’s Recommendations:

০ Immediate deployment of an ECOWAS peace and governance monitoring mission.

০ Suspension of the ongoing constitutional review process in Togo.

০ Mediation of a transitional national dialogue involving ECOWAS, the AU, and neutral stakeholders.

০ Lifting of restrictions on media and civil society organisations to uphold transparency and free speech.

As protests continue to grip the country, GLOSARGG has urged the international community to act swiftly to prevent further violence and restore constitutional order and public trust in the Togolese state.

The call has sparked reactions across West Africa, with civil society organisations, activists, and human rights observers now looking to ECOWAS and the AU for decisive leadership in managing the crisis.
