President John Dramani Mahama has delivered a major assurance to nursing trainees in Ghana, confirming that monthly allowances will resume next month, with arrears from January to June 2025 to be fully paid.

Speaking at the Nalerigu College of Nursing and Midwifery on Friday, June 13, 2025, during his ongoing Thank You Tour of the North East Region, Mahama revealed that the government has completed plans to automate the allowance payment system.

“We have designed it such that your payment will come automatically every month so that there will be no arrears,” Mahama stated.

The President acknowledged the delays but affirmed that the allowances were already allocated in the 2025 national budget. He assured the trainees that disbursement would commence next month and include back payments for the first half of the year.

“The budget was made from January, and so when we start paying you next month, the arrears from January to June will be paid to you,” he added, drawing cheers from the crowd.

In a further boost to healthcare education, Mahama announced that Nalerigu College of Nursing and Midwifery has been chosen as one of the institutions to be upgraded to degree-awarding status, enhancing professional training and opportunities for healthcare workers.

“I'm happy to inform my father, the Nayiri, that the Nalerigu College of Nursing and Midwifery is one of the colleges selected for upgrading into a degree-awarding institution,” Mahama declared.

The twin announcements were welcomed with enthusiasm by both students and staff, many of whom have long called for improved financial support and academic recognition.
