Tensions escalated dramatically during the Ablekuma North parliamentary rerun on Friday, July 11, 2025, when a group of unidentified macho men stormed the St. Peter’s polling station, triggering panic and chaos among voters and electoral officials.

According to Channel One News reporter Jude Duncan, NPP candidate Nana Akua Afriyie and former Fisheries Minister Hawa Koomson were among those physically assaulted during the melee. Eyewitnesses reported a coordinated invasion by the men, who aggressively disrupted the election process before security personnel intervened.

"The polling station went into disarray. People were running, and officials had to pause activities. Nana Akua was clearly targeted," one eyewitness shared.

Despite heightened security measures deployed for the rerun, the Ghana Police Service failed to contain the attackers promptly, drawing sharp criticism from voters, observers, and civil society actors.

The rerun in 19 polling stations was ordered by the Electoral Commission (EC) to resolve disputes from the 2024 general elections and restore representation to the Ablekuma North Constituency, which has been without an MP since December.

Interestingly, the New Patriotic Party (NPP) had officially announced a boycott of the rerun, citing procedural concerns. However, Nana Akua Afriyie defied the party’s directive and contested the rerun independently, adding fuel to political tensions already gripping the area.

Observers worry the latest outbreak of violence may further undermine electoral credibility and escalate political divisions, especially with the final outcome set to determine parliamentary majority status between the NPP and NDC.
