History was made on Friday, July 11, 2025, as Madam Ewurabena Aubynn of the National Democratic Congress (NDC) clinched a landmark victory in the Ablekuma North parliamentary rerun, unseating the ruling New Patriotic Party (NPP) for the first time since Ghana’s return to democratic rule in 1992.

Ewurabena Aubynn, an educationist and entrepreneur with a past affiliation to the NPP, polled 34,163 votes, narrowly beating former Deputy Ambassador to China and NPP’s Nana Akua Afriyie, who garnered 33,881 votes. The 0.42% margin marked one of the closest races in recent Ghanaian electoral history.

🔁 From NPP to NDC: A Political Turnaround

Aubynn’s story is particularly compelling. Once a member of the NPP, she defected to the NDC in 2022, where she steadily built grassroots support and eventually emerged as the party’s 2024 parliamentary candidate.

“Her victory is symbolic—not only for the NDC but for Ghanaians yearning for change in one of the NPP’s most historically safe constituencies,” said a political analyst on Joy FM.

⚖️ The Road to the Rerun

The Ablekuma North Constituency became a national flashpoint after the Electoral Commission (EC) reversed an initial declaration and cited ballot disruptions and fire damage at one polling centre.

Despite legal action filed by Nana Akua Afriyie and the NPP seeking to block the rerun, the Accra High Court threw out the injunction, paving the way for the July 11 rerun across 19 polling stations.

Though the NPP hierarchy boycotted the election, Nana Akua Afriyie went ahead to contest, further polarizing the party’s base.

📉 NPP Reacts, EC Vindicated

In the wake of the loss, NPP General Secretary Justin Kodua Frimpong accused the EC of manipulating the democratic process, claiming that the party had already won the December 7, 2024 vote. The EC, however, stood by the rerun as a necessary corrective to procedural violations.

With Ewurabena Aubynn’s victory, the NDC inches closer to a parliamentary majority, holding 184 seats compared to the NPP’s 88—a potentially transformative shift in legislative dynamics.
