Residents of Nsawam and Amasaman stage protests over government inaction on the stalled
Ofankor-Nsawam road construction.
Angry residents from Nsawam and Amasaman took to the streets on Tuesday, July 9, to protest what they describe as the government’s continuous neglect of the Ofankor-Nsawam road project — a critical highway that connects Accra to the Eastern Region.
The road, a major arterial transportation link, has been in disrepair for years, causing frequent traffic congestion, vehicle damage, and significant economic losses for businesses and commuters alike.
Protesters — including commercial drivers, local traders, and community members — marched with placards that read:
🪧 “Accidents Daily, How Many More?”
🪧 “Accountability Missing!”
🪧 “Years of Dust, Delays and Broken Promises.”
The Ofankor-Nsawam stretch has become nearly impassable, plagued by large potholes, poor drainage, and abandoned construction machinery. Commuters say they endure hours-long delays daily, with accidents becoming routine.
“We are not asking for luxury — just a safe road,” said Jeffrey Smith, organiser of the Nsawam Traffic Watch Community in an interview with Citi News. “We want the government to listen and act.”
Protesters demanded immediate attention from the Ministry of Roads and Highways and an official timeline for project completion. They also called for parliamentary oversight and independent audits into the road’s funding and implementation.
Although the protest drew hundreds, it remained largely peaceful. Police and military personnel were on the ground to maintain order, and no incidents of violence were recorded.
As of press time, no formal response had been issued by government officials or the Roads Ministry, further fueling the community’s frustrations.
