A grieving family in Kwaebibirem Municipal District of Ghana’s Eastern Region is crying out for justice following the alleged murder of a young driver, Francis Owusu — known locally as Yaw Owusu — who was kidnapped and later found dead after a failed ransom negotiation.
In a heartbreaking interview on Asuom News, Yaw Owusu’s sister, Maabena, shared the tragic series of events that led to her brother’s death — and a haunting phone call she wishes she could take back.
“A woman called asking if I was the mother of Francis Owusu. I said yes, and she told me he hadn’t returned home after going to work,” Maabena recalled.
Shortly after the family began searching for Francis, someone answered his phone. What followed was chilling.
“He told me they had brought my brother to them to be killed, and they were demanding GH¢60,000 within two hours,” she said.
Thinking it was a scam, Maabena responded in disbelief.
“I said, even if we sell our family house, we can’t raise that amount — so you can kill him. He said, ‘We’ve heard what you said,’ and hung up.”
The next day, her sister requested a photo of Yaw Owusu. Moments later, she broke into tears. When Maabena pressed for answers, she received the news no family ever wants to hear.
“She told me they had found his lifeless body.”
The family is now appealing to the government and law enforcement to investigate the matter urgently, as the tragic incident has raised alarms about the growing threat of violent crime in the region.
“We are asking the government to investigate this matter for us,” Maabena pleaded.
This devastating case adds to growing concerns about kidnapping-for-ransom incidents in parts of Ghana, where families are increasingly targeted by criminals demanding large sums of money.
