In an emotional revelation, Samia Nkrumah the daughter of Osagyefo Kwame Nkrumah recounted the poignant conversation she had with her father on the fateful day of his overthrow in 1966. Samia, who was a young girl at the time, remembered how her father’s voice, filled with calmness and authority, conveyed a message that would echo in her heart for decades: “Do not be afraid.
The day was February 24, 1966, and Ghana’s first president was facing a coup d'état that would end his historic leadership. As the news broke of the military's seizure of power, Nkrumah was in China, on an official visit. From there, he immediately sought to reassure his family, knowing that their lives would be forever changed.
In a phone call made to his daughter, Nkrumah’s words were a stark contrast to the chaos that surrounded the political crisis. Despite the gravity of the situation, Nkrumah’s tone remained composed, almost serene. “The people of Ghana are doing what they have to do, and this is a part of our struggle for independence and freedom. But you must not be afraid, Samia. We shall overcome," he told her.
The message, which was a call for strength, resilience, and patience, has stayed with Samia throughout her life. She often reflects on how her father’s sense of optimism and dedication to the pan-African cause shaped her own understanding of leadership, sacrifice, and courage.
For many Nkrumah legacy remains that of a visionary who, despite facing immense challenges and ultimate exile, never lost sight of his mission for a united Africa. His final words to Samia encapsulated the spirit of an unwavering struggle for freedom, even in the face of adversity.
Now, over 60 years later, Samia Nkrumah’s testimony serves as a powerful reminder of the enduring influence of a father’s love and the resilience that defines his family’s legacy.
