Ghanaians React As High Court Makes A Big Announcement About Chairman Wontumi After His Trial Today

The Office of the Attorney-General and Ministry of Justice has officially brought forward six distinct criminal charges against Bernard Antwi Boasiako, popularly known as Chairman Wontumi, along with his company, Akonta Mining Limited.

These charges are related to alleged violations of Ghana’s mining laws, specifically concerning unauthorized mining activities within protected forest reserves.

Reliable sources close to the case have revealed that the charges largely focus on illegal mining operations in the Tano Nimiri Forest Reserve, situated in Ghana’s Western Region.

Akonta Mining Limited is accused of conducting mining operations without obtaining the necessary licenses and permits mandated by Ghanaian law.

The allegations against the company and Chairman Wontumi include engaging in mining without proper authorization, causing unlawful environmental damage, and breaching regulations put in place to safeguard forest reserves.

These laws are crucial for maintaining ecological balance and protecting Ghana’s natural heritage from degradation.

Chairman Wontumi, who also holds the significant political position of Ashanti Regional Chairman for the New Patriotic Party (NPP), has strongly denied all allegations and refuted any involvement in illegal mining activities through his company.

Nonetheless, thorough investigations carried out by the Ministry of Lands and Natural Resources in collaboration with the Forestry Commission of Ghana have reportedly uncovered substantial evidence implicating both the company and its principal.

As a result, the Attorney-General has decided to pursue prosecution to address these serious breaches.

This case represents a significant development in Ghana’s ongoing fight against illegal mining, commonly known as galamsey, which has wreaked havoc on the country’s environment.

Galamsey operations have caused widespread deforestation, water pollution, and destruction of farmlands, thereby endangering both biodiversity and the livelihoods of many local communities.

Given Chairman Wontumi’s high-profile political status and the growing public concern over the detrimental effects of illegal mining, this legal action is expected to draw widespread national attention and spark intense public discourse.
