The Ghana Armed Forces earlier this month has announced a mass recruitment exercise for the year 2025, which about 12,000 personnel to be trained in the next three years.
The Ghana Armed Forces however cautioned the public on some general eligibility criteria to follow in order to qualify for the year's recruitment exercise. Paramount among them is the age qualification for both tradesmen and non tradesmen. A non tradesman must have a minimum age of 18 and maximum of 25 years while tradesmen must be at least 18 and at most 30 years at the time of application.
Aside the age eligibility, applicants must possess at least 6 in 6 BECE subjects including English and Mathematics as well as at least D7 in 6 subjects in WASSCE including English and Mathematics.
Failure to adhere to any of the above eligibility criteria will lead to a disqualification.
However, what most citizens have problem with is the age criteria that sort to disqualify citizens who are even a day older than 25. This calls have caught the attention of some lawmakers including Samue Nattey George of Ningo Prampram and Nelson Dafeamekpor of South Dayi who make references to advanced countries like USA and Canada that accept citizens up to the ages of 35 years. This is interesting because these are members of the ruling party and these calls could lead to something profitable, subsequently leading to an amendment to the age requirements.
Meanwhile members of the opposition party, NPP led by Hon. Rev. Ntim Forduor claims the calls by his opponents was merely to appease to the whims of their party footsoldiers to be enlisted into the army and this could derail the integrity of the military and that the army must be allowed to do their independent recruitment without political interference.
