Veteran journalist and Managing Editor of The Insight, Kwesi Pratt Jnr., has strongly criticized members of the New Patriotic Party (NPP) for what he describes as “empty political apologies.”
Speaking on Metro TV’s Good Morning Ghana show hosted by Moro Awudu, Mr. Pratt said the sudden flood of public apologies from top NPP figures is nothing more than a political show meant to win public sympathy ahead of the 2028 elections.
He referred to comments made earlier by Gabby Asare Otchere-Darko, a leading member of the party, who questioned why so many NPP members were apologizing publicly. Mr. Pratt agreed with Gabby, saying the trend makes the party look confused and unserious.
“Sometimes you ask yourself, what are they even apologizing for? If you’re saying sorry, you must be clear about what you did wrong. Otherwise, it becomes a self-inflicted wound,” Mr. Pratt said.
He added that an apology should come from genuine remorse, not as a political strategy. “Right now, their apologies look like political gimmicks of no real value. That’s exactly what Gabby was trying to say, and he’s right,” he emphasized.
Mr. Pratt also pointed out that Gabby Otchere-Darko’s position in the NPP is different from that of Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia, the party’s 2024 flagbearer. “Gabby is not contesting for any position; he’s not even a party executive. He’s just a lawyer and cousin to President Akufo-Addo. What he says doesn’t carry the same weight as Bawumia,” he explained.
He warned the NPP that these “reckless apologies” could backfire if they continue without clear reasons, adding that such acts could cause the party more damage than good ahead of the 2028 elections.
