A new video on social media has shown how beautiful the road looks at the place where a statue of former President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo was once built in Takoradi.
The video captures the Effia-Nkwanta – Sekondi road, which is now almost fully completed and has changed the look of the area.
The road project was started under President Akufo-Addo’s government to improve movement between Sekondi and Takoradi. It also made access to the Effia-Nkwanta Regional Hospital much easier for drivers and pedestrians.
To honour the then President for completing the project, some residents decided to build a statue of him at the roundabout near the hospital.
The statue was officially unveiled on November 6, 2024, during Akufo-Addo’s visit to the Western Region as part of his “Thank You Tour.”
The pedestal of the statue carried an inscription that read: “Thank you from Western Region. H.E. Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo, President of the Republic of Ghana. 6th November 2024.”
Sadly, the statue faced several challenges. In December 2024, part of the statue’s leg got damaged but was later repaired. However, on the night of January 12–13, 2025, unknown persons completely destroyed it.
The head was cut off, and other pieces were scattered around the area. The act angered many residents, and the police began investigations, but no one has been held responsible so far. Since then, the statue has not been rebuilt.
The new video shows a neat and smooth four-lane road meeting at the roundabout where the statue once stood. The area looks very modern and organized, with many people praising the quality of the roadwork. Drivers say the smooth road has made travel easier and safer.
While many viewers online are impressed by how beautiful the road looks now, some feel sad that the statue is no longer there to honour the former President for the project. The empty space at the centre of the roundabout serves as a reminder of the statue that once stood there.
