Wontumi Reveals True Owner Of Akonta Mining, Presents Evidence In Court To Clear His Name

A dramatic twist has emerged in the long-running Akonta Mining controversy as Bernard Antwi-Boasiako, popularly known as Chairman Wontumi, has reportedly revealed the true ownership of the embattled mining company. The shocking disclosure was made during a heated court session, where the Ashanti Regional Chairman of the New Patriotic Party (NPP) presented what he described as authentic documents to set the record straight.

For months, Akonta Mining Limited has been at the center of national debate, accused of engaging in illegal mining (galamsey) activities in forest reserves, despite government assurances of strict enforcement against environmental destruction. Critics and opposition voices had repeatedly alleged that the company was owned by Chairman Wontumi himself, a claim he has consistently denied.

However, during Friday’s proceedings at the High Court in Accra, Wontumi stunned the courtroom by producing official ownership records, registration documents, and signed business certificates, which he said proved that he is not the owner of Akonta Mining Limited.

According to reports, the documents presented bore the names of two private business individuals and an investment entity as the legitimate proprietors of the company. Wontumi told the court that the allegations linking him to the mining firm were politically motivated and part of a grand scheme by his detractors to tarnish his image and weaken his political influence in the Ashanti Region.

“The truth is finally out. I have said it over and over again that I have no ownership in Akonta Mining. Today, I have brought every legal document to prove my innocence. Those who have been spreading falsehood will now be exposed,” Wontumi stated confidently.

The court reportedly admitted the documents into evidence, while the opposing counsel requested time to review and authenticate them. Legal observers say the revelations could significantly shift the direction of the case, especially if the documents are verified to be genuine.

Following the court session, reactions have poured in from both supporters and critics. While NPP loyalists have hailed the disclosure as vindication for Wontumi, opposition figures are calling for further independent investigation, insisting that political connections may still exist behind the scenes.

Environmental activists, on the other hand, have urged the government not to lose focus on the core issue the environmental impact of Akonta Mining’s operations regardless of who owns it.

The case has now been adjourned for further hearing, with the presiding judge directing that the presented evidence be examined thoroughly.

For many Ghanaian, Wontumi’s revelation marks a turning point in one of the most talked-about mining scandals in recent years as the court edges closer to uncovering the full truth behind Akonta Mining’s ownership and operations.
