Kennedy Agyapong to Contest NPP Flagbearer Primaries Again |
Ralph Agyapong, who previously vied for the NPP’s parliamentary candidacy in the Bantama constituency, stated that Kennedy Agyapong has gained significant support among party members. According to him, many individuals who previously backed Vice President Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia in the last primaries are now shifting their support to Kennedy Agyapong. He emphasized that the party's base is re-evaluating its leadership direction following the NPP’s loss in the 2024 general elections.
In the 2023 NPP flagbearer primaries, Dr. Bawumia emerged victorious with 61.47% of the votes, while Kennedy Agyapong secured 37.41%. Despite losing, Agyapong maintained a strong presence within the party, drawing support from grassroots members and those who sought a more assertive and unconventional leadership approach.
The 2024 general elections proved to be a major setback for the NPP, as the party was defeated by the opposition National Democratic Congress (NDC). Former President John Dramani Mahama secured over 57% of the total valid votes, returning to power and dealing a significant blow to the NPP’s political dominance.
This defeat has sparked internal discussions within the party about its future leadership. Many party members believe that a change in strategy is necessary to revitalize the NPP’s electoral prospects. Ralph Agyapong noted that Kennedy Agyapong's appeal to both grassroots supporters and business-oriented voters positions him as a strong contender in the upcoming primaries.
Ralph Agyapong further revealed that there are ongoing discussions within the party regarding the possibility of an early congress. If the proposal is approved, it could pave the way for the NPP to reorganize and select a new leader ahead of the next general elections. He expressed confidence that Kennedy Agyapong will be on the ballot, ready to challenge for the party’s leadership once again.
Kennedy Agyapong’s decision to contest the primaries aligns with his long-standing vision of transforming the party and the country’s economic policies. Known for his outspoken nature and strong stance against corruption, Agyapong has built a reputation as a bold leader who is not afraid to challenge the status quo. His campaign is expected to focus on economic revitalization, party unity, and strengthening Ghana’s business environment.
The upcoming primaries will be a crucial moment for the NPP as it seeks to rebuild after the 2024 defeat. With growing discontent among party supporters and calls for fresh leadership, Kennedy Agyapong’s re-entry into the race could redefine the party’s direction.
As the NPP prepares for the next phase of its leadership contest, all eyes will be on how Kennedy Agyapong positions himself against potential challengers, including Dr. Bawumia, should he decide to run again. The political landscape within the party is shifting, and the race for the NPP’s flagbearer position is expected to be fiercely contested.
