Ghanaian fans criticize Eddie Nketiah for declaring interest in Black Stars after years of hesitation. |
In a recent appearance on The Beautiful Game podcast, the Crystal Palace forward said:
“When I was younger, representing England was a natural choice after progressing through the youth system. However, if Ghana invites me, I will gladly accept.”
While some fans welcomed the striker’s willingness to play for his country of heritage, others were far from impressed. The backlash was swift and intense, particularly on X (formerly Twitter), where many Ghanaians questioned Nketiah’s sincerity and motivation.
Critics argue that Nketiah’s sudden interest in the Black Stars comes only after failing to break into England’s senior national team despite being the U21 all-time top scorer.
The Ghana Football Association (GFA) reportedly made multiple approaches to the player in past years, all of which were rebuffed.

“Now that England isn’t calling, Ghana looks good to him? We are not a backup plan,” one user posted.
“Ghana deserves committed players, not opportunists,” said another.
Ghana is currently well-positioned in the qualifiers for the 2026 FIFA World Cup, adding further intrigue to the timing of Nketiah’s statement. Some fans believe the striker is attempting to revive his international career now that Ghana’s trajectory appears promising.
Others argue that a call-up should be reserved for players who committed to the national team during difficult times — not only when the spotlight shines brighter.
Despite the criticism, a segment of Ghanaians supports Nketiah’s inclusion, believing his Premier League experience could benefit the national team.
“He’s still young and has top-tier experience. Let’s give him a chance if he’s serious this time,” wrote one supporter.
Football analysts have weighed in as well, noting that modern football often sees players switch allegiances based on opportunity, family influence, or career strategy. However, authenticity and loyalty still remain highly valued by many fans.
With no official invitation yet extended by the GFA, it remains to be seen whether Coach Otto Addo and his team will entertain Nketiah’s interest. The striker's recent move to Crystal Palace, where he's expected to earn more playtime, could be seen as an effort to bolster his chances for international selection.
But as it stands, many fans are watching closely — and voicing concerns loudly.
Regardless of when Eddie Nketiah granted his interview, should he be welcomed to the Black Stars?https://t.co/BbRy2yGjYh
