Afenyo-Markin foresees deep cracks within the NDC as succession talks heat up after Mahama’s eventual exit. |
Minority Leader Alexander Kwamina Afenyo-Markin has fired political shots at the ruling National Democratic Congress (NDC), predicting that the party will be torn apart by internal succession struggles following President John Dramani Mahama’s final term in office.
Speaking to party supporters in a recent engagement captured on video and widely shared on social media, Afenyo-Markin warned that the NDC’s unity is fragile and could shatter once the issue of choosing a successor arises.
“The NDC will soon start experiencing internal conflicts. Everything they accused us of, they will do even worse,” he said.
Afenyo-Markin, who is also the Member of Parliament for Effutu, stressed that because President Mahama is serving only one term, the party will be forced to identify a new leader ahead of the 2028 elections—a move he believes will trigger intense internal competition and voter apathy.
“They will face leadership issues. Mahama has just one term, so they will have to bring in a new leader. In 2028, apathy will be on their side,” he emphasized.
He contrasted the NDC’s expected apathy with the NPP's current struggles, arguing that all governments deal with low voter enthusiasm at some point.
Citing the 2024 election turnout statistics, Afenyo-Markin argued that the NDC’s own voter turnout in its strongholds was lower than the NPP’s in key regions, contradicting the narrative that the NPP suffered significantly from apathy.
“In the Ashanti Region, they say we had only 67% turnout. But they had just 65% in the Volta Region. In Greater Accra, with all their noise, voter turnout was only 55%,” he added.
Encouraging his party’s supporters to remain unshaken, the Minority Leader said the NPP should focus on regrouping and strategizing for a strong comeback in the 2026 parliamentary elections and beyond.
“So we just have to stick together. They can share all the money in the world… but time will expose everything.”
Afenyo-Markin’s remarks are being seen as part of the NPP’s broader efforts to boost party morale and discredit the governing NDC ahead of upcoming political battles.
