Archbishop Agyinasare shares his journey from addiction to salvation, crediting love as the turning point. |
In a heartfelt interview on Joy Prime, Archbishop Charles Agyinasare, founder of Perez Chapel International, has shared his powerful transformation from a marijuana-smoking, alcohol-drinking youth to a globally recognized preacher of the gospel.
The spiritual leader, known for his charismatic ministry and philanthropic work, revealed that his encounter with Christ happened in the most unexpected way—through a romantic interest.
While working as a pupil teacher in 1987, Agyinasare was invited by a family to offer extra tuition to their daughters. As he began spending time with the two sisters, he admitted to developing feelings for both.
“When I arrived, there were two sisters, and I liked both of them,” he recounted. “When I was making my move, one of them said, ‘My boyfriend is Jesus, and I want to introduce you to him.’”
Thinking it was a joke and a clever barrier to romance, the young Agyinasare agreed to follow her to church—unaware his life was about to change forever.
On the day of the church service, he admitted he was high on marijuana, dressed casually in what he called a “Bola shirt and waist-high trousers.”

“I sat at the back, waiting for the service to end so I could leave with the girl. Then the preacher gave an altar call,” Agyinasare recalled.
Despite being under the influence, something about the preacher’s words struck him deeply.
“I don’t remember exactly what he said because I was high, but when I heard the altar call, I went to the front and gave my life to Jesus.”
According to Agyinasare, the power of drugs, alcohol, and tobacco broke immediately—marking the beginning of his transformation into the man of God he is today.
Since that moment, Agyinasare has gone on to establish one of Ghana’s largest churches, with an international following. His testimony serves as an inspiration to many, especially the youth battling with substance abuse and peer pressure.
Today, he uses his platform not just to preach, but also to advocate for moral discipline, national development, and spiritual growth.
