The New Patriotic Party (NPP) has intensified efforts to secure the release of its Ashanti Regional Chairman, Bernard Antwi Boasiako, widely known as Chairman Wontumi, from the custody of the Economic and Organised Crime Office (EOCO).

Leading the charge is Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia, the party's 2024 Presidential Candidate and Former Vice President, who, along with senior party leaders, is reportedly spearheading a coordinated plan to meet the stringent GH¢50 million bail condition.

This was confirmed by Divine Agorhom, Greater Accra Regional NPP Chairman, during an interview with Citi News on Friday, May 30, 2025.

“It is not only His Excellency the Former Vice President, but all leading members, including our caucus in Parliament and the national leadership, are involved in finding a solution,” Agorhom stated.

Wontumi was detained on Tuesday, May 27, 2025, amid ongoing investigations into fraud, financial loss to the state, and money laundering. Although EOCO granted him bail on Wednesday, May 28, the required GH¢50 million remains unmet by his legal team.

Agorhom further noted that the NPP’s legal council is considering petitioning EOCO to vary the bail conditions, citing the excessive financial burden.

“If all that fails, then we will have to pool resources and see what we can do to get him out,” he added.

As pressure mounts, this development underscores the high political stakes surrounding Wontumi’s case, which continues to draw intense public and media scrutiny.
