Tensions continue to rise in Ghana’s political landscape following a bold public appeal by Paul Kwabena Nyandoh, Ashanti Regional Communications Director of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), calling on former President John Dramani Mahama and his brother Ibrahim Mahama to intervene financially in the ongoing legal troubles facing NPP’s Regional Chairman, Bernard Antwi Boasiako, popularly known as Chairman Wontumi.

Wontumi remains in custody at the Economic and Organised Crime Office (EOCO) after failing to meet a staggering GH¢50 million bail condition imposed 48 hours earlier. He is under investigation for fraud, money laundering, and causing financial loss to the state, with fresh claims from Deputy Attorney General Justice Srem-Sai indicating his potential ties to an international crime syndicate.

Speaking during a protest on Thursday, May 29, 2025, at the EOCO headquarters in Accra, where NPP supporters and Minority Members of Parliament had gathered in solidarity, Paul Nyandoh said the only individuals with the financial capacity to secure Wontumi’s bail were the Mahama brothers.

“It is only President John Mahama and his brother Ibrahim who have that amount of money. So, at this moment, we appeal to them to give us the bail amount of GH¢50 million so that Chairman Wontumi can be released,” Nyandoh said during an interview with Oyerapa News.

He emphasized Wontumi’s deteriorating health, suggesting that continued detention without medical care could have severe consequences. His emotional appeal framed the situation as dire and politically motivated, claiming that even if supporters and MPs were "sold," they wouldn’t raise enough for bail.

The GH¢50 million bail — equivalent to 500 billion old cedis — has sparked public debate not only over the fairness of the legal process but also over the financial capability and role of high-profile political figures like the Mahama family in ongoing political tensions.

Meanwhile, EOCO has remained firm on its stance, citing the seriousness of the allegations and ongoing investigations as the basis for Wontumi’s continued detention.

The situation continues to stir debate across political and social spheres, with many questioning both the legal implications and the political undertones of the appeal and the charges.
