Dr. Okoe-Boye says NPP needs both Bawumia and Kennedy Agyapong to win 2028 elections, calls for party unity. |
Former Health Minister Dr Bernard Okoe-Boye has issued a strong appeal to members of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), urging them to refrain from personal attacks and factionalism as the party begins to warm up to its 2028 flagbearer contest.
Speaking on Peace FM’s Kokrokoo morning show on May 8, 2025, Dr Okoe-Boye stressed the importance of maintaining unity and strategic collaboration between the two main flagbearer hopefuls — former Vice President Dr Mahamudu Bawumia and former Assin Central MP Kennedy Agyapong.
“Whether you support Kennedy or Bawumia, if the two do not come on board, it will be difficult for us to win power,” he warned.
Dr Okoe-Boye acknowledged that both aspirants have distinct political strengths, which the NPP must harness to ensure electoral success in 2028. He emphasized that favoring one over the other with verbal attacks could backfire if either candidate eventually leads the party.
“Kennedy has his strengths, things that if accepted, will help. The same applies to Dr Bawumia. Supporting one of them is not wrong, but we must be careful not to offend anyone,” he said.
He went on to caution that previous experiences within the party show that those who attacked certain leaders later faced political challenges once those leaders assumed power.
“I know people who attacked government appointees, only to suffer when those same people became leaders,” he added.
The comment comes at a time when internal tensions are beginning to surface within the NPP, with grassroots supporters and political commentators already drawing battle lines ahead of what promises to be a competitive flagbearership contest.
Dr Okoe-Boye's message serves as both a warning and a strategy, suggesting that the NPP can only return to power if it presents a united front and strategically merges the political capital of both Bawumia and Kennedy Agyapong.
With national elections set for 2028 and the party in opposition, the NPP’s internal unity will be crucial not just for selecting a viable candidate, but also for regaining the trust of the electorate. Political observers are watching closely as tensions build — and calls for restraint, like Dr Okoe-Boye’s, could shape the future of the party.
